ALLISON BROCK FROM CKUA
..."Eva Levesque, daughter Suzanne and friend Lana Floen share most of the writing credits along with lead and harmony vocals that blend perfectly, creating a very smooth flowing sound on every track.
All of the tracks are played plain and simple with the guitar, bass and banjo as the main instruments. These are supplemented tastily by several other musicians, including Ian Tyson's long-time band members, The Two Gords, (Maxwell and Mathews)
Ian Tyson himself adds his raspy vocals briefly (along with the ladies) on a wonderful song penned by Pat Hatherly and Jim Lewis. The resulting Alberta Blue is definitely a highlight track on the disc.
Any fan of Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Pardon's collaborations should enjoy this Alberta grown trio."

Touring to promote their second album, "Song in a Dream", we are excited to have these ladies back at the Blackbird!!!

Cowpuncher was birthed in a lethargic swamp in the recesses of Southern Alberta; they are the after birth of a misanthropic mother nature and an indifferent father time. With guns drawn and wits sharpened like steel points they come to plunder the Canadian musical landscape with a sound that borders paranoid country with a stinking wool mitt of rock and roll. Cowpuncher is a collective of the finest musicians that Western Canada has to offer and they are unabashedly passionate in the performance of their high energy brand of music.

Tie up your daughters and hide your horses when these wild-men come to town, they have laid waste to almost every small town in the western provinces. Along their travels Cowpuncher has been abused by, or have abused, such greats as Fred Eaglesmith, The Joey Only Band, The Fast Romantics, The Smokin’ 45s, Kent McCalister and the Iron Choir, Brooke Wylie and the Coyotes, The Dudes, Axis of Conversation, and Dojo Workhorse.

Cowpuncher has always brought the mountain and   recorded their   second album in a converted Church in the mountain town of Coleman. ( that would be here, the blackbird, peeps!!!) Cowpuncher is the ultimate Canadian band, resourceful, ruthless, and relentless.

Cam Penner, Friday, may 20th 8pm

Picture
www.campenner.com

In a complicated world, Cam Penner finds beauty in simplicity, with an honest, spare approach to folk music that is refreshing in an age filled with so much insincerity and irony. Singing uncompromising songs about redemption and truth, Penner is a voice for the disenfranchised, a storyteller for those who never reach their destination. Penner's fiercely personal lyrics are complemented by a gentle acoustic guitar style, and the defiant heroes of his songs are weary, but they are never defeated.

Penner has described his philosophical outlook and songwriting muse: "Sometimes I feel the thousands of souls I've listened to are people living inside of me, telling their tales." Agreed. When listening to Penners songs you can hear the struggle, the hope, the yearning to be better. "I've never really written topical songs, I usually write about the emotional struggle, the pull between what's right and wrong".

Lynn Miles, Sunday nite, May 8, 6pm, dinner, 7 showtime!!!!!

Through a career that has seen her move from Ottawa to Los Angeles and back again, with stops in
Nashville and Austin, she has always written music with unbridled feeling and vulnerability. Miles has
consistently been unflinching in putting herself out there. Now with her eighth studio offering Fall For
Beauty the voice of her experience has truly elevated her songwriting to its richest depth of emotion.

While her melodies undulate between traditional country and folk roots, on Fall For Beauty, it's her
sensitivity to the world around her that pours itself directly into Miles' music to make it stand out.
“Love Doesn't Hurt” was written as an emotional plea for people in abusive relationships. “I wrote this
song after watching Oprah do a show about domestic violence. She kept repeating "love doesn't hurt",
and even though I've written plenty of songs about how emotionally painful love can be, I wanted to put
this crucial idea right up there beside my other songs, for balance, and clarity.” says Miles. “I've been playing the song live and have been approached by several people who work at women's shelters who tell me it's a powerful song, and that they want to play it for their clients. There's no better compliment than that.”

Therein is the powerful secret behind Miles' music - her astute observations of life, its trials and triumphs,
are the hallmark of sincerity in her music. The gritty honesty of her music never falters – neither does her
unshakeable ability to make even the most melancholy lyrics sound as if they are brimming with hope and
grace. “Little Bird” infuses her lyrics with an assertive and encouraging voice. “I wrote this song after reading "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts" by Gabor Mate. It's the best book on addiction and articulates the need for compassion when dealing with addictions. The song about what I call The X Factor, the initial source of pain that can cause a person to seek solace in alcohol and drugs.”

Lynn Miles is a musician in the rarest sense of the word, an unmistakable talent, an eye for both the
subtle and sweet that can only be unearthed with experience. Unearth Fall For Beauty - in stores and online in Canada on October 5th, 2010, and will be released internationally in late 2011.

Dinner with Lynn Miles and Your Mumma, Sunday May 8, 6 pm, 7 pm showtime!!

JT. Nero, Saturday, April 30 8pmhttp://www.jtandtheclouds.com/

JT and the Clouds come from Chicago; their music is Chicago music - rough edged, sad, hopeful, and shot through with soul.
The music is alive to the ever-shifting tides of modern indie music, but remains steeped in the city's fine traditions of soul, rhythm and blues. They resist the urge to pigeonhole themselves in a genre, or be easily pigeonholed. Most of the people that inspire them are similarly hard to pin down.
It's these ghosts of the past and future, awake in their music and words, that have pushed critics so far afield in reaching for name-checks to compare them to -- Sam Cooke, the Band, the Velvet Underground, Prince, Curtis Mayfield... and more recently, Bon Iver, M. Ward, Jeff Buckley ....

The Clouds, led by Jeremy "JT" Lindsay, have been putting out records and touring since 2004. Until recently, they got a bit more notoriety in far-off ports then their own backyard. That has changed in the last year. After putting out an EP, demons/demons, under the name JT NERO - a softer, (even) sadder, slightly weirder manifestation of the JT and Clouds sound - JT and Co enjoyed a wave of good press in their hometown. The Chicago Tribune tabbed JT as one of its "ten artists on the verge of breaking big in 2010," and Richard Milne at WXRT tabbed demons/demons as one of the top ten releases of 2008,

The nice words around town have ratcheted up expectations for the new record, Caledonia, set for release this Spring. After demons/demons' more fragile expression of love and loss, the Clouds were keen to get after it on this record -- Caledonia grooves, and rocks a bit harder through and through. JT's words may still ask you to sort through the same minefield of heartbreak and lonely hunger, but the Clouds have determined that you should at least be able to dance while you're doing it. The album release is set for April of 2010 - in the meantime, JT will be taking to the road in both the JT NERO format -- which usually features JT and smaller formations of Clouds - and full-band JT and the Clouds attacks. The early part of the Spring will feature Eastern US and Canadian dates, followed by a European and UK run. All tour dates are currently available at the band's web sites.

"The Fugitives are the combined talents of Vancouver artists Adrian Glynn, Barbara Adler, Brendan McLeod, and Steve Charles. A group of multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, poets and novelists, each with their own burgeoning solo career, they’ve won individual accolades as diverse as the Canadian SLAM poetry championship, CBC poet laureate, and a place in the Peak performance songwriting series. But their primary focus lies in banding together to integrate their sensibilities into a dynamic mix of modern folk.
Formed four years ago on Vancouver’s East Side, The Fugitives have trod their instruments and words numerous times through Canada and Europe Performances that began in abandoned bank vaults and small vegetarian restaurants in England have turned into mainstage appearances on the Canadian folk festival circuit and sold out headlining shows at venues as diverse as the Vienna Literary Festival, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and the Chutzpah Dance Festival.
Like most young bands The Fugitives have weathered poverty, missed trains, and a few line up changes (parting amicably with upcoming folk talents Mark Berube and CR Avery), while honing their live act into a versatile mix of story and song. As the CBC has it, “whether you go for the poetry, the music, or both, this show is simply brilliant.”
The Fugitives last release, In Streetlight Communion, was nominated for a 2007 Canadian Folk Music Award for pushing the boundaries of contemporary folk music. They’ve returned with a five song EP, ‘Find Me’, to be followed by a full length release in March of 2010. Featuring orchestration by Veda Hille and production by Matthew Rogers, ‘Find Me’ will be supported this October by a tour across the country. Check for them in your town; their live act keeps on improving, and they’ve gotten much better at catching trains.
“A hypnotic and swirling mix of voice and music that straddles the line between traditional songwriting and poetry” – Vue Weekly (Edmonton)
“Wildly talented” - Georgia Straight (Vancouver)
“The Fugitives are capable of achieving dizzying, Arcade Fire-ish crescendos, replete with parallel melodies, complex harmonies and brimming torrents of emotion.” – Uptown Magazine (Winnipeg)
“One of the best events we’ve ever had…right up there with Allen Ginsberg and Ken Kesey” – Executive Director, Dylan Thomas Festival (UK)"

United Steel Workers of Montreal, Feb. 19, Saturday...8pm

Picture

"Their live gigs have achieved a legendary cult-like status…they sing about you and me, and to you and me. It’s real, it’s about a good time, it’s about life.
Nightlife Magazine

Matt Semansky , Chartattack
"Six-piece Montreal band plays dirty, dive-bar country with an urban twist.
The Steel Workers proved that playing the first set of the night doesn't need to hold a band back if they have the right attitude. Their catchy country tunes and infectious enthusiasm started winning whoops and cheers halfway through and earned them a huge ovation at the end of the set. This band owned the stage from the start, mostly on the strength of their excellent songs. Their look was appropriately dirty, save for vocalist Felicity Hamer, whose punk-rock mini-skirt and boots added sex appeal, and frontman Gern F, who wore a suit and hat that could have been stolen from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' closet. The banjo player seemed to be having an especially good time chatting with the crowd. Pretty much every member has a distinct personality.

Hamer and Gern F. have distinct yet complementary voices, with Hamer softening the extreme edges of F.'s Tom Waits-inspired growl. This vocal interplay powers the band, but the support work of their colleagues can't be overlooked. Without a drummer, they used banjos, guitars and bass in a variety of ways for percussive effect, and their overall sound is authentic enough to entertain both old-school country fans and curious onlookers.

At the end of the show, The Steel Workers slowed it down and asked people to grab a partner and dance. It worked. When you play an early set and you convince people to slow dance in the middle of the room, you pretty much rule."

If features a wealth of road and heart worn original material that lays a torch to the influence of Bruised Country Soul, Classic Southern Rock and Heartfelt Americana.
JOHN WORT HANNAM For five years, Juno nominee John Wort Hannam was a teacher on the largest reserve in Canada – The Kainai Nation, part of the Blackfoot Tribe. In 1997 a friend played him a Loudon Wainwright III record and John was hooked by the music and stories. In 1998 he bought a guitar and in 2000 he quit teaching to pursue the dream of being a working musician. He resides in Fort Macleod, Alberta.

"Tim Hus has a voice sweeter than a Husqvarna chainsaw, a wit that is sharper than rusty barbed wire, and a list of songs longer than a Saskatchewan fence line! Following his acclaimed CD Bush Pilot Buckaroo comes the highly anticipated fifth album (his 2nd for Stony Plain Records) Hockeytown joining Corb Lund and the legendary Ian Tyson on the label. Hus comes at his audience like a runaway rig, while firing off image-laden lyr...ics with the intensity of a western gunslinger.

The Alberta based singer with the black hat and easygoing personality is a captivating and crowd pleasing performer who easily draws listeners into the settings of his storytelling country and roots music. Tim's distinctive songwriting and spirited performances by the members of his dynamic band stand as a cornerstone of authentic Canadiana!

Tim tours and performs concerts with his band Tim Hus & The Rocky Mountain Two, featuring Peterbilt Pete Christian on lead guitar and Riley Tubbs on upright string bass. Pete is a talented and versatile musician having played music professionally around the world. Solid licks and agreeable melodies reinforce the songs while Tubbs lays down a solid rhythm with doghouse slap and a thick groove. Occasionally the group is joined by Pat Phillips on the drums

Sam Baker too!!! sunday, nov. 28

Picture

http://www.sambakermusic.com/
Sam Baker’s is a hard-hewn grace, transcendentally wrought with grit, brutally chiaroscuroed by a weary deliverance sought in common lives. If the local songwriter’s first album, 2004’s Mercy, grasped for a deeper understanding of the dark tragedies beyond our control – a return to the Peruvian train wreck by a bomb that nearly killed him in 1986 – then Pretty World (2007) was its reconciliation, a turn outward with grateful eyes renewed by contemplation. Persistent in Baker’s vision is an empathetic evocation of treading life’s stilled waters, beauty welled in the dirt of daily endurance. His characters, drawn with the insight of Townes Van Zandt and John Prine, toil unglamorously, overlooked save for Baker’s rough, sing-talk psalms giving them fitting voice. Cotton likewise finds its muse on the outskirts: the Mexican immigrant of “Mennonite,” the roadside pleads of “Signs,” the girl, tired and worried yet calmly knowing, in “Not Another Mary.” These tales labor under the heavily shouldered harness of history, Baker’s Texas a parabolic culmination of inescapable genealogies, from the tent revivals of twin tracks “Palestine I” and “Palestine II” to the handcrafted inevitability of “Bridal Chest.” His familiar intertwining of traditional fare roots the tales with inescapable inheritances, the album’s opening strains of “Dixie” breaking upon the title track’s grounded blues as female voices rise against Baker’s hard drawl. Cotton’s biggest shift is the fuller accompaniment that empowers Baker’s ballads, especially Steve Conn’s piano and the electric guitar growl of “Palestine I,” but his poignancy emerges best in the soft lullaby of “Moon” and unshakable loss of “Angel Hair.” Closing with the thematic counterpoint to the toil of “Cotton,” “Snow” finally gestures toward a momentary redemption in patient penitence, a complete, if fleeting, renewal: “First light city streets are white pristine. They are waiting.” – Doug Freeman

Gurf Morlix at the Blackbird Nov. 28

Picture

http://www.gurfmorlix.com/

Gurf Morlix is one of the best guitar players and producers of Americana music in the whole world. He is also a great singer songwriter. You might know that he once a guitar player and producer for Lucinda Williams…. Born 1951 in a small town of 8000 near Buffalo, New York, and grew up with Peter Case. Gurf is now living in Austin, Texas. He didn’t come from musical family like many other professional musicians, but he took interest in music in his childhood and started lessons on the bass when he was in elementary school. In the mid 60’s, the Beatles came to the States and changed rock music forever. Later, many British bands invaded the States. This was called the British Invasion. It made million of teenagers crazy and effected Gurf, too. He grew up listening to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and a lot of other British bands. He also started to play guitar at around 13. And he started his professional career when he was only 16 years old at little night clubs and biker bars in the local area.

Gurf had played such places for many years. And he started to discover various music other than rock’n roll such as country, folk and blues music. Soon Buffalo’s scene was not big enough for him. He couldn’t find musicians to play with. And he asked Commander Cody what he should do and he said, “Austin or Boston.” Gurf choose Austin and moved there in 1975. He started to play in Austin and Houston for years but later moved to Los Angeles and found a circle of friends who played country-based Americana music. He met a lot of great musicians like Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale, Duane Jarvis and Lucinda Williams. Gurf went and forth between Austin and Los Angeles, but settled down in Austin finally. In 1981, He started his recording career as a bass player on Eric Taylor’s record called Shameless Love. Then in 1988, he produced and played on Lucinda Williams’ that third record. Gurf had worked with her for a long time and his talent had become known but he decided to part ways with her in 1996. As a result, he has been in collaboration with a lot of musicians.

Nowadays, Gurf has worked in his studio a lot and he’s rarely on the road, but sometimes plays in Austin. He plays solo, or with his own band. He also plays with Ray Wylie Hubbard whenever he can. Gurf is a member of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame and the Austin Music Hall of Fame

"You could say Wil Mimnaugh was always destined to be a musician. Born into a musical family, Wils mother was always singing along to the coveted record player or belting out duets accompanied by Wils father on guitar. Songs rhythms were stomped out on the kitchen floor late into the weekend nights. Tunes from the likes of Hank Williams and Simon and Garfunkel were in-house performance staples. “An Evening With John Denver” played on repeat by virtue of being stuck in the 8-track player of the station wagon. Laughing and loving music as a family, the Mimnaughs were in it together."

here's some info on our artist of the week....

Joshua Cockerill is f***ing amazing. Buy his record. Now." - Serena Ryder "As a songwriter, Joshua is one of the bright lights on the Canadian scene, and has one of the best new voices I've heard. Both sonically and lyrically, his album towers above any first attempt I've heard recently. I'm going to wager that Joshua will be around for quite some time." - Justin Rutledge

"Influenced and inspired by legends Neil Young and Leonard Cohen and contemporaries Blue Rodeo and Rutledge, Joshua Cockerill is an alt-country rocker with a poet's soul."
- Winnipeg Free Press

Toronto songwriter Joshua Cockerill found his country roots growing up in Alberta. After moving to Toronto, he took to writing and performing alternative country music, reflecting his western pride with an eastern big-city sensibility. After kicking around the local music scene for a few years, Joshua decided to break his piggy bank and independently finance his first recordings. "I've known I wanted to be a musician since I was ten years old," says Cockerill, "You could say that everything I saved up over the years was preparing for the making of this album."

His debut album, "The Trick With Your Heart I'm Learning To Do", was released in November, 2009, and features guest appearances by Serena Ryder, Justin Rutledge, Jack Marks, Greg Cockerill, and Dustin Bentall, among others.

Tim Williams, Monday, October 4, 7pm

Picture
Blackbird is proud to present, for his third visit... Mr. Tim Williams, Monday October 4 at 7

Tim always entertains us with a million stories... I'm thinking we might hear some ZZ Top insider info....

Tim WIlliams opened up for ZZ TOp in december at the Saddledome, insane show, check out the video link below......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VF7Mkq7wHg&feature=related

from tim's website:
"Tim Williams is a blues-based singer / songwriter / multi - instrumentalist. He is a 40 year veteran of the 'Roots' music scene in North America, roots which stretch back to the coffee-house scene of his native California in the mid 60's.
Settling in Canada in 1970, Tim is a studio musician, producer, and a performer in constant demand. He has played Folk / Blues / Jazz festivals and concert halls and clubs from Halifax, to Vancouver Island, to the Yukon.

....and a little more...

"Inspired by the Hillbilly and Western Swing music he heard as a child, Tim absorbed late Fifties Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll, Hawaiian and Mexican music, early Sixties Folk, and Bluegrass “like a sponge” before discovering a passion for traditional blues styles which was fueled by seeing many first generation blues musicians live during the “Blues Boom” of the mid and late Sixties."" Following his first appearance at the Edmonton Folk Festival in 1988, Tim returned to performing and writing full time. In addition to his solo work he co-founded the popular acoustic blues trio Triple Threat, and co-produced their JUNO-nominated cd The Terra Firma Boogie. From that disc, zydeco star CJ Chenier covered Tim’s song “Au Contraire, Mon Frere,” as did Toronto’s Krockodiles. Steve Pineo covered “In Rehearsal For The Blues” on his second cd. Leaving Triple Threat in 1994 with his solo release Riverboat Rendezvous (“…Tim Williams has the taste, panache and style to pull it off.” Living Blues magazine) Tim released several more cds and has continued to tour Canada and much of the rest of the world, spreading his blend of blues, roots and original music with three tours of the United Kingdom, two of Australia, appearances in Cuba and Morocco, as well as producing numerous cds for other artists (another JUNO nomination for Ray Bonneville’s Rough Luck cd) and working in theatre as a composer and musical director (five Betty Mitchell Awards for Outstanding Musical Direction and Outstanding Composition). "

"The most exciting thing about a Lester Quitzau performance lies not so much in being blown away at the wealth of sources he draws from at will as it does in marvelling at how skillfully he transcends those sources and transforms them into something entirely new and electrifying. As this year unfolds, fans can look forward to both recorded and live opportunities for enjoying the newest facets of his ever-evolving musical identity. "

"On his new CD, "The Same Light", the Juno Award-winner unveils sensitive, finely-crafted songs showcasing his writing skills, soul-drenched blues sure to satisfy his longest-standing fans, and three instrumental pieces that transcend limiting tags like "jazz" or "folk" or "roots". It closes with a powerful treatment of Pete Seeger’s "To My Old Brown Earth", blending many of the CD’s musical flavours into a heartfelt statement of our shared responsibility toward the "fragile, beautiful planet" we occupy together. Throughout the CD he displays the virtuosity as a guitarist and vocalist that have won him growing critical acclaim and admiration over the past 20 years, whether as a solo performer, a member of the award-winning group Tri-Continental, collaborator with international recording artist Mae Moore, or The Lester Quitzau Trio."

"Lester Quitzau rattles and reverberates the cornerstones of folk, jazz, blues and rock…” (FFWD magazine). Distilling the past 20 years of experience writing, recording and performing his music, Lester has come up with an approach that is fresh. His unique style and fluidity on slide, acoustic and electric guitars, in addition to his well crafted songs and warm vocals, are showcased on the latest release 'The Same Light', a mellow, seasoned listen that grows on you with every repeat, reminiscent of Bill Frisell, Jeff Beck and Ben Harper. Lester’s musical journey, which his many followers have watched with love and loyalty, began with a solid traditional folk/ blues foundation , now branching out into a myriad of influences and a sound that is his own."

"Lester is a comfortably funny man; he offers openness and friendship to his audience with a sense of humour and spontenaity that gives a connection to the listener and makes us want to sing, dance, laugh and hang out with him. In his spare time, Lester is a West Coast organic gardener and environmental activist."

"Lester has been described as "a mellow guy that throws down a heavy groove". In 1998, Lester was nominated for a Juno with his stunning second release, A Big Love, as it took blues where no one expected it to go. His songs have a way of sounding classic, yet fresh. He also performs as part of the Juno award winning trio, Tri-Continental, with Bill Bourne and Madagascar Slim."

Garnet Rogers

Picture
 ...taken from Garnet's webside...
"Garnet Rogers has established himself as 'One of the major talents of our time". Hailed by the Boston Globe as a "charismatic performer and singer", Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence - close to six and a half feet tall - with a voice to match. With his "smooth, dark baritone" (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs "give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart" (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.."

Bocephus King Saturday night, august 21 dinner at 7 amazzzzing show at 8

Picture
Bocephus King is here..... hard to describe... best to just jump in with both feet.... you know it will be a good time...his shows traditionally sell out in those big bad cities, so get in on the ground floor of this one!!! tix $10 advance and $12 at the door.... dinner at 7, show at 8.....

"Critics continually struggle to slot Vancouver native Bocephus King (Jamie Perry) into any musical box. All the critics know is that they want his music on their top-ten best lists. The musical presence of this legend isn’t exactly pop-folk. Nor is he roots-rock nor just Indie. He has even been labelled carnival burlesque, but he is none of these -– and all of them. His sound is uniquely all his own and unlike anything else on the music circuit, making it –- and Bocephus himself -– intriguing, interesting and even compelling.."..he has written produced albums for several artists, toured and performed before releasing his fourth album, All Children Believe in Heaven, in which Bocephus writes about the darker side of Old Hollywood –- the lovelorn, the jaded, the vices, in an unsterilized biopsy of the ‘Golden Age’. He salutes tragic heros like Jack Kerouac, Henry Miller and Montgomery Clift with styles ranging from Nashville to blues-rock to gospel to pop, bringing visions of 1950’s Hollywood to life.

Today, Bocephus’ sell-out shows have been described as unconventional, Vaudevillian three-ring circuses with no intermission. You can bet your bottom dollar that you will definitely be left wanting more!"

Gary Fjellgaard with Saskia and Darrel  in concert, Friday, July 23 , 8pm

Picture
The consummate entertainer, Gary Fjellgaard’s rich, timbered voice, sculpted by caragana winds and sanded smooth by the salty breezes at his home somewhere on the island, left no doubt that we were right about this appealing performer all along. His room-filling, practically orchestral guitar style, optimistic and often soulful lyrics, combined with his respect for his art and his audience left no doubt we were in the presence of a master craftsman — and a witty one at that.
~ "Contender" Earns another Title - Review November 6th, 2007: Winspear Centre Theatre, Edmonton, Alberta
Fjellgaard, Saskatchewan-raised in the days of bad roads and good manners wouldn’t brag on this, but those of us “in the know” are aware of his trophy case groaning under the weight of numerous national and international music awards. Perhaps the most deserved was his induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, and after his performance last night at Edmonton’s Winspear Centre he proved us right yet again and earned another deserved title; the Legendary Gary Fjellgaard.

"Pigeonholing The Warped 45s sound is a slippery task best not attempted. As points of reference, consider the artists the band cite as musical touchstones – Wilco, The Band, Blue Rodeo, Steve Earle, Tom Waits – all of whom defy stylistic straitjackets. The Warped 45s incorporate country, gospel, folk and rock elements with seamless grace."

"This is a band with a formidable arsenal of musical weapons, as they feature four vocalists, two songwriters, and multiple multi-instrumentalists (how many groups do you know that include three banjo players?)."

Saturday, June 19, Movie nite, The Clean Bin Project  doors open at 7....

Picture
saturday nite is MOVIE NITE!!! blackbird is super excited to be the screening room for the The Clean Bin Project... this documentary will make you laugh out loud while still getting the message of waste not want not.... is it possible to live a year without creating  ANY garbage?? come on down for dinner and a movie and see for yourself... a great one for the kids, call to reserve a spot.....
"For a year, they bought nothing and threw away zilch. Now BC Filmmakers are cycling Canada & 'Talking Trash' with their documentary The Clean Bin Project. Starting out as a personal challenge - a household competition to see who could produce the least amount of garbage - has now become a feature documentary that will be coming to the Blackbird June 19th. Filmmakers Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer are hitting the road on bicycles to show their film in communities across Canada.
The documentary film is about a regular couple and their quest to answer the question "is it possible to live completely waste free?" They go head to head in a competition to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least landfill garbage in an entire year. Their light-hearted competition to refuse, reduce and recycle their way to the smallest garbage bin is set against a darker examination of the large-scale environmental impacts of our “throw-away society”. Featuring interviews with renowned artist, Chris Jordan and marine pollution expert, Captain Charles Moore, The Clean Bin Project presents the serious topic of waste reduction with optimism, humour, and inspiration for individual action."

"Cowpuncher is going to bring its very own brand of heart breaking honky tonk to the sweet and beautiful town of Coleman via the fantastic Blackbird.
We started in the mountains. Through the rivers. Into the long tall prairie grasses. We took those lost years. When we lost our way. We took our memories. Some things we’d rather forget. But we took it all. We learned our craft. Through the noise. Through the smoke. Through the heartache. The empty rooms. The cold nights. This is everything. This is Cowpuncher."

Buffaloswans, a soulful psychedelic country act that has performed with successes such as Dan Mangan and east coast Two Hours Traffic, is a local quintet with high ambitions of their own. Check out their sweet slide guitar, Fender Rhodes and unison vocals on MySpace.
Jess Hill has been featured on CBC radio, performed at The Vancouver Folk Festival and Vancouver International Jazz Festival, to name a few of her recent experiences. www.myspace.com/carolynmark
"Some things are just meant to be. Birds are born to fly, politicians were born to lie, big fat guys with giant beards were born to ride their machines without getting hassled by the man, and Carolyn Mark was born to make music.
Ever since first taking to the stage as Templeton the rat in her elementary school's musical version of Charlotte's Web, show business has been the main driving force in Carolyn's life. After coming to the obvious conclusion that musicians were much more fun to hang around with than actors, in the early 90's Carolyn formed her first band... all-girl surfy twang popsters, The Vinaigrettes. This was the beginning of a love affair with music, musicians and the road that, even after 15+ years of crazy hard work, still puts the nitro in her funny car."
"Carolyn Mark is a headstrong singer with wanderlust and critical-thinking skills that she exercises in songs that never settle for easy answers." - Dave Heaton, PopMatters
"Really there’s no roots-country chanteuse as engaging as Mark, whose well-intentioned banter is capable of making even the sourest puss at a show crack a smile." - Exclaim
"Whether she lands on her feet, or ass-over-teakettle, Mark always sounds like she's having fun." - No Depression Magazine
