Fernie will never be see in the same innocent light... the Blackbird Girlz lit up the night at picnic restaurant... so fun... so tasteful.... just getting ready for June's crazy music month..... rolling along... 05/26/2010
Well, May is coming to a close.. and HEllllllllo.. did this month take 5 minutes or what?... answer: yes, yes it did! BIrthday month is coming to a close, Nikki and I, already a year older and wiser are waiting on Jen to join us tomorrow... then we are all growed up... our century celebration is complete.... you do the math.... CAREFULLY. We have been super busy at the Blackbird, the Patio continues to grow and evolve... First we had a load of sand... then we had a load of dirt.. and in case those two piles got lonely, we threw in a load of rocks to keep them company... Now the sand got bored, so we called in a pile of Douglas Fir to keep it interesting.. it looks like I'm running a building supply store here... The guy who delivered the rocks took out a fence post... so we have a sort of rigged up gate.. and various massive holes for cement as well... the ice in my mojito is melting...... but progress was made this past weekend... the Lovely Lori Masur, who is one of our FAVORITE weekenders arrived Saturday and basically planted herself in the back (until her husband Gary dragged her into the car Monday!), hauling rock, and moving sand and creating the beginning of a great patio... including a mosaic of a bird... you could maybe see it from space... or at least from a helicopter.... the Douglas Fir could perhaps be on the deck by this evening... (selling of the firstborn is in negotiation...) Our Sunday Brunch is kicking along, filling tummies and making weary travellers happy..... The completion of the drywall reno's needed for our license are done... we think... and if everything lines up ... and we ALLL know how that goes.... we should maybe possibly have a deck with cerveza's by june-ish... week one or two is what we are hoping for... but let's not say it out loud.... that's all from blackbird HQ right now... time to check on the dogs... that's right... DOGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS... why not just throw another one into the mix.... but more on that later. xo blackbird the competiton begins..... 05/04/2010
![]() Linda Mcrae and Dave Lang were next to play the Blackbird, April 30th..... the evening was fantastic, we laughed... Dave Lang's views on life and love.. we cried... James Whitmire's poem to his wife Linda... and , we tried to figure out how to work the reverse rider into the conversation...... finally, well after the show and several red wines... Dave was feeling peckish, and wandering about the kitchen.... having toured last year with David Newberry he had actually heard rumour of this musician breakfast.... "what did they make??" ..."how many people did they serve?"... it was not long before I found the archilles heel... Dave is ever so slightly competitive....he seemed to have suceeded to get James and Linda halfway convinced of the joys to be had the next morning in the kitchen.... A quick primer on the espresso machine, the baking case, and instructions to collect eggs and newspapers form the gas station across the street.. and I was confident another cozy morning under the pendeltons lay ahead... Now Mr. Lang has been thru the Blackbird before... apron on, that man knows his way around the kitchen.... last year saw him making up trays of German haystacks... so I had confidence that everything would go to plan.... 6 hours later, rattling of espresso cups were heard... a fire crackling... I rose, expecting a double espresso, and instead was presented with a request for french bread. Dave was making Toad in the Holes... very serious business this reverse rider.... he was taking this to the next level.... Linda was cooking up potatoes, James "I just like a bowl of dry cereal in the morning" was requesting perhaps "just a little something".... sausage AND bacon?? oh my....and before long we were sitting down to a most glorious meal.... Dave had consumed several americanos, and was happily vibrating around the kitchen, plating, serving...and popping out to chop some wood...("how much did Ryen chop?") and by the time the dishes were done, laundry dried... indeed the bar had been raised... With full hearts, new friends, full tummys, and new recipes we waved goodbye to our new champions of the reverse rider musician breakfast... The blackbird girlz looked at each other, and then at me, "is there someway we can get the reverse rider in writing???" welcome May musicians, welcome....... the happiness...... 05/04/2010
![]() David Newberry and James Lamb played at the Blackbird on the 23rd of April.... RODEO WEEKEND... sound the bells... but persevere we did.... after a most entertaining night - these guys are seriously talented! - the idea of the reverse rider came up... and Dave "i was recently a line cook until i got fired" Newberry suggested that he and James run the coffee house the next morning.... ah, the folly of youth, i thought, "these dudes are NEVER getting out of bed....." as the clock crept to 2am... but it came out as "that is the best idea ever, I am sleeeeepin' in my friends..... night night....." and I DID... what could go wrong? Leaving the coffee house in the hands of two travelling lads.... a sacked line cook and a self described hobo of no fixed address? Have at it boys! And Sunday morning, 9am the report came in from Maybry, the resident 11 year old that, "those guys that were playing guitar last night? ya, well they 're turning on the stove....." and under Maybry's watchful eye, as the blackbird girlz wandered in, with admitted trepidation... James and Dave carried the Blackbird coffee house over the threshold of happiness, and into the house of the reverse rider... where she shall live out her years.... never having to wonder where the next meal is coming from... at least for the morning after music night.... blackbird girlz all agreed that the taste of breakfast - let alone the very idea of the reverse rider - was too good to ever turn back from... and the tradition was born... onward! The reverse rider and a whole new world..... 05/04/2010
Well, talk about an epiphany... shall we? A few weeks ago we had Rodney Decroo and his band , along with Spoon River visit our little coffee house... wonderful music, sublime food, great people and on all accounts, a seriously great time was had by all... Unfortunately... for our highway peeps... Sunday was the collateral damage... with eight people sleeping in various nooks and hobbit havens, and choir lofts of the church... Sunday seemed to just creep up on us all without announcement, until it just sort of seemed redundant to open..... so a sharpied "blackbird's on holiday" was stealthily placed and the espresso machine coughed and sputtered out of a much too short sleep.. as did most of the band... Now when you stay at the blackbird, you are family.... in fact, our blackbird family actually grew by one: Ryen Froggatt, in BOTH bands.. was waiting tables, washing dishes and chopping wood like a pro... (we love that boy... come home Ryen...come home....) So a family stlye Sunday fry-up with the papers is on the menu..... teas, double americanos, mexicali eggs with bacon..sigh... BACON........ fresh berries and cream... it's allll going on in blackbird's kitchen.... ok..scene is set... now I'll try to find the plot.... Rodney and I had been having discussions about band "riders" (a list detailing everything the artist needs in the event of a show).... how the most hilarious things are requested, fluffy white towels...heated dressing rooms.... bottled waters..6..room temp., 2 chilled....micro brewery beer, organic, wheat free, vegan....blah blah blah, half a chicken upon arrival.... like crazy... if you have ever been to our little town, let alone our little coffee house... you KNOW that is not happening..(heated? please... i wish!) ... so we started talking about the idea of riders..and maybe a reverse rider.... I, the venue, would send the band a list of things I required... kinda funny... but i liked it... i liked it a lot.... so i'm thinking........ percolate...percolating.... ![]() yay! Miss Nikki has created a fabulous new website for the Blackbird coffee house... and put me in charge of the blog... I think her exact words were ...."ok, the website is up and organized... so if you could keep your "Kym-isms" to the blog that would be great....." ouchie.... but I do understand... some of you on the receiving end of my emails may have noticed that tangents are often found and followed.... and that's ok... eventually i find my way back to the original plot... or a more interesting one develops. I hope you enjoy the stories of the Blackbird, and stop in for your own taste.... often! Welcome friends! xx kym blackbird HQ |
